Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar Namadi, has led a high-powered delegation to the Africa Food Systems Summit in Dakar, Senegal, where he met with the Chairman of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), Mr. Hailemariam Dessalegn, to explore stronger partnerships for agricultural transformation in the state.

The meeting, held on the sidelines of the ongoing summit, focused on strategies to boost productivity, improve market access, and strengthen the competitiveness of rice and wheat farmers in Jigawa. Discussions also highlighted the need to align policies and governance frameworks with sustainable agricultural growth, while promoting peer-to-peer knowledge-sharing platforms to empower smallholder farmers.

Governor Namadi reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to global partnerships as part of efforts to modernize agriculture, enhance food security, and drive inclusive economic growth in line with his 12-Point Agenda.

“Agriculture remains the backbone of our economy, and Jigawa is determined to leverage its vast arable land and resilient farming population to achieve greater prosperity,” the governor stated.

He further noted that Jigawa already leads in the production of wheat, rice, sesame, and hibiscus flower in Nigeria, stressing that his government will consolidate ongoing agricultural initiatives to fully harness the state’s potential.

The governor was accompanied by the Commissioners for Agriculture and Livestock Development, the Director-General of the Jigawa State Agricultural Transformation Agency, the Director-General of the Agricultural Research Institute, the Director-General of Invest Jigawa, and the Special Adviser on Intergovernmental Affairs.

The Africa Food Systems Summit 2025, which runs from September 1 to 4, has attracted key stakeholders from across the continent to discuss strategies for strengthening food systems and agricultural development in Africa.
